In the old western movies, the good guys always wore white hats. Black Hat Society lives up to their name. This ain't your traditional happy country music- this is Doom Country. Dark, aggressive, sun burned and sand blasted, with too much death and even more refusing to die, no matter what. Take equal parts western plains and high deserts, mix in a quart of weird tales, and remember that the bad guys always wore black hats. That's Black Hat Society.
Black Hat Society is a two piece made up of Karin on fiddle and mandolin, and Hauk, who sings and plays guitar, banjo, lapsteel, and anything else he can get his hands on. They are proud to endorse Gold Tone Music Group, StrumNComfort thumb picks, and G7th Capos.
Black Hat Society's first album “Doom Country” is a genre inventing work, taking cues from country legends like Willie Nelson and blending the spaghetti western sounds of Ennio Morricone. Throw in a little Megadeth on the guitar solos and some Murder by Death, and you get Doom Country.
“The title track of the album, Doom Country, is about finding a man who was lynched, who is hanging in a tree but refuses to die. He just says he's gonna find a way down off the tree and then wreak a savage vengeance on those who hurt him,” says Hauk. “It's our outlook on life- you can try and kill us, but we ain't gonna die. We're gonna come back fighting.”
In these troubled times, when the garb of white supremacy sits in the highest offices, maybe it's time for a few black hats to ride.
